Political storm erupts as petitions pile up against outspoken former presidential hopeful

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has escalated its internal battle with former Assin Central MP and presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, after officially forwarding petitions filed against him to the party’s Disciplinary Committee.

The move has triggered fresh tension within the party, with the leadership ordering the committee to investigate the allegations and submit its findings within two weeks.

According to the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) received several petitions and followed the party’s constitutional procedures by referring the matter to the disciplinary body.

The committee, chaired by former Roads Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta, is expected to examine the claims and present a report to the National Council, which will make the final decision on the way forward — including any possible sanctions.

Internal battle intensifies

The controversy follows strong criticisms from Kennedy Agyapong against the party’s leadership, particularly over issues surrounding the Afari Military Hospital project. His comments have sparked anger among some NPP members, with some accusing him of making statements capable of damaging the party’s image.

Some party members have demanded disciplinary action, arguing that repeated public attacks against party structures and officials could undermine unity ahead of future political battles.

The development has also exposed growing divisions within the NPP, with reports of heated scenes and clashes among supporters during a recent party meeting, where some protesters called for action against Kennedy Agyapong.

Ken Agyapong’s fate now hangs in the balance

With the disciplinary process now underway, attention is turning to the committee’s findings and whether the party will impose any punishment.

Party officials have, however, warned against prejudging the outcome, insisting that due process must be followed before any decision is taken.

The unfolding drama has added another chapter to the long-running tensions between Kennedy Agyapong and sections of the NPP leadership, as the party seeks to maintain unity and rebuild its political strength.
