Crackdown on Political Interference as Government Moves to Reinforce Neutrality of Security Services

A stern warning has been issued to regional political leaders to halt what has been described as the arbitrary and partisan use of state security agencies, amid growing concerns over attempts to influence law enforcement for political advantage across parts of Ghana.

The directive, issued by the Interior Minister through the Ministry of the Interior (Ghana), cautioned regional ministers against interfering in the operations of security services or deploying them in ways that could undermine public trust and institutional neutrality.

“Security Must Serve the State, Not Political Interests”

According to the minister, the credibility of Ghana’s security architecture depends on its ability to operate independently, professionally, and without political manipulation.

He stressed that any attempt to use police or other security personnel to settle political scores, intimidate opponents, or advance partisan agendas would not be tolerated.

“The security services exist to protect all citizens, not to serve partisan interests,” the directive emphasized, warning that violations would attract serious consequences.

Growing Concerns Over Political Interference

The warning comes amid rising public discourse over allegations of political interference in security operations in certain regions, particularly during periods of heightened political activity and local tensions.

Security analysts say such practices, if left unchecked, risk eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions and could inflame political divisions at the local level.

Regional Ministers Urged to Respect Boundaries

The Interior Ministry has reminded regional ministers that while they play key coordination roles in governance, operational control of security agencies rests with established command structures that must be respected at all times.

Officials are urging strict adherence to constitutional protocols governing civil-military and political-security relations to ensure stability and professionalism across all regions.

Call for Discipline and Institutional Integrity

The directive further calls for stronger collaboration between regional administrations and security agencies based on mutual respect, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law.

It warns that the politicisation of security institutions could undermine national stability and compromise efforts to maintain peace and order.

Reinforcing Public Trust in Security Services

As the debate continues, the Interior Ministry maintains that safeguarding the neutrality of security agencies is essential to maintaining public trust and strengthening democratic governance.

The statement concludes with a firm commitment to uphold discipline within the system and ensure that security institutions remain non-partisan guardians of national safety rather than tools of political contestation.
