The Ghana National Fire Service has issued a strong public warning urging households and businesses to exercise extreme caution in the use of electricity as the rainy season sets in, amid rising concerns over fire outbreaks linked to electrical faults and unsafe practices.

According to the Fire Service, the combination of heavy rains, moisture, and poor electrical handling significantly increases the risk of short circuits, power surges, and house fires—many of which can be prevented with basic safety measures.

Officials caution that careless use of electrical appliances, exposed wiring, and overloading of sockets remains a major cause of preventable fire incidents during the rainy period. They are therefore urging the public to ensure all electrical installations are properly insulated and regularly checked by qualified professionals.

The Service also warned against leaving electrical devices plugged in during thunderstorms, stressing that lightning strikes and power fluctuations can trigger serious damage to homes and properties.

Residents are being advised to switch off and unplug sensitive appliances during heavy rains and to avoid the use of damaged extension boards or makeshift electrical connections, which pose heightened risks under wet conditions.

Fire officers say public compliance with these safety guidelines could significantly reduce the number of fire emergencies recorded during the season, which typically sees a spike in related incidents across the country.

The GNFS further encouraged landlords, tenants, and business owners to conduct routine safety checks and ensure that fire extinguishers and emergency exits are accessible and functional at all times.

Meanwhile, the Service has pledged to intensify public education campaigns in markets, schools, and communities to raise awareness about fire prevention during the rainy season.

As the rains continue, authorities are appealing to the public to treat electrical safety as a priority, warning that negligence could lead to avoidable disasters, property loss, and even fatalities.
