Popular Ghanaian preacher Prophet Nana Agyemang Owusu has publicly backed President John Dramani Mahama over the heated national debate surrounding LGBTQ+ issues, intensifying conversations already dominating political and religious circles across the country.
Speaking passionately on the controversial subject, the outspoken prophet defended Mahama’s recent comments on the matter, insisting that the President’s position has been misunderstood by critics and political opponents.
According to reports, Prophet Nana Agyemang Owusu argued that Mahama’s remarks should not be seen as support for LGBTQ+ activities, but rather as a constitutional and procedural stance regarding how the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill should be handled in Parliament.
The preacher reportedly praised Mahama for what he described as a “balanced and thoughtful” approach to a highly sensitive national issue, adding that many people attacking the President are deliberately twisting his comments for political gain.
The LGBTQ+ debate has once again become a flashpoint in Ghanaian politics following renewed discussions about the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. The proposed legislation seeks to impose stricter restrictions on LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy in Ghana.
President Mahama recently stated that while he supports Ghana’s cultural and family values, he believes any legislation on the matter should go through the proper democratic and constitutional processes. He also urged international partners to respect Ghana’s cultural and legal position on LGBTQ+ issues.
Prophet Nana Agyemang Owusu’s endorsement is expected to fuel even more public discussion, especially among religious groups and conservative communities where the LGBTQ+ issue remains deeply contentious.
The debate continues to divide opinion nationwide, with some Ghanaians calling for stricter anti-LGBTQ+ laws while others raise concerns about human rights, freedom of expression, and international backlash.
