Ghana has been ranked the 11th most polluted country in Africa according to the IQAir 2025 World Air Quality Report. The report highlights that Ghana’s annual average PM2.5 level—a measure of fine particulate matter in the air—is significantly above the World Health Organization’s recommended limit, posing serious health risks including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Urban emissions, traffic congestion, industrial activities, and the widespread use of biomass fuels are cited as major contributors to the pollution problem. Cities like Accra and Kumasi are particularly affected, with air quality levels comparable to some of the most polluted urban centers globally.

While some improvement has been noted compared to previous years, experts warn that urgent action is needed. Cleaner energy solutions, stricter emissions regulations, improved monitoring, and better urban planning are critical to reversing the trend and protecting public health.

The ranking underscores the growing environmental challenge in Ghana and across Africa, emphasizing the need for coordinated and sustained intervention to address air pollution.
