NASA’s historic Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar flyby in more than 50 years, includes a remarkable astronaut with a connection to Ghana. Christina Koch, one of the mission specialists, studied at the University of Ghana during her college years before becoming a NASA astronaut. Her time at the university helped shape her early global academic and research experience.

The Artemis II mission launched in early April 2026 aboard NASA’s Space Launch System. The mission will take the four-person crew on a roughly 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth, testing critical spacecraft systems in preparation for future lunar landings.

Christina Koch is set to become the first woman to travel to the Moon’s vicinity. The crew also includes Victor Glover, the first Black astronaut on a lunar mission; Reid Wiseman, the mission commander with prior spaceflight experience; and Jeremy Hansen, the first non-American to fly beyond low Earth orbit.

This mission highlights decades of scientific progress, diversity in space exploration, and the growing international connections in astronaut training and research.
