In a jaw-dropping legal battle that has shaken Ghana’s political and religious circles, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 vice-presidential candidate, has dragged Islamic cleric Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Samudeen to court over explosive and defamatory accusations.

The lawsuit, filed this week, seeks a staggering GH¢10 million in damages, claiming that the respected cleric maliciously labelled NAPO a homosexual, allegedly attempting to smear his reputation during a critical election period.

Court documents reveal that Sheikh Samudeen allegedly told followers that NAPO only got married after becoming a running mate, insinuating that the politician’s marriage was staged and that he does not genuinely like women. NAPO argues that these claims are false, damaging, and strike directly at his integrity and public image.

In his response, NAPO condemned the allegations as “false and malicious,” demanding a full public retraction and apology, as well as financial compensation. The legal clash highlights growing tensions between faith leaders and political figures in Ghana and raises questions about freedom of speech, political accountability, and the limits of public commentary.

As the case heads to court, the nation braces for a high-stakes showdown that is already dominating headlines and igniting fierce debate across the country.
