A dramatic shootout between police and armed robbery suspects unfolded along the Obuasi–Dunkwa Highway, leaving two suspected robbers dead as security forces cracked down on a dangerous criminal gang.

According to the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, intelligence indicated that a group of armed men had gathered in a bush along the busy highway, reportedly preparing to launch a robbery. Rapid deployment by police on March 10 and 11 led to an encounter in which the suspects opened fire on officers; police returned fire, fatally wounding two of the suspects.

The operation also led to the seizure of firearms and ammunition and the arrest of several gang members, while two other suspects reportedly fled the scene. Investigators say the gang is believed to be linked to a string of robberies in areas including Obuasi, Dunkwa, Wasa Akropong, and Asin Fosu.

Police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on armed robbery and illegal firearms trafficking, promising to pursue all individuals connected to the gang and strengthen efforts to protect travelers along major highways.
