Accra — Former President John Dramani Mahama is facing renewed criticism after veteran political commentator Kofi Tonto described his use of his brother’s private jet for official state duties as “highly unethical.”

Tonto, known for his outspoken views on governance and public accountability, said the decision raises serious conflicts of interest and questions about transparency in public office.

“Even if there was no financial cost to the state, using a family-owned private jet for government business sets a dangerous precedent,” Tonto said in an interview with local media. “It blurs the line between personal interest and public service.”

Reports indicate that Mahama reportedly used the aircraft for several official trips during his tenure, a move that critics argue could be perceived as favoritism toward family assets and raises ethical concerns under Ghanaian public office standards.

Supporters of Mahama, however, argue that the former president ensured all flights were properly documented and did not incur additional costs to taxpayers, framing it as a practical solution in a time of limited state aviation resources.

The controversy has reignited debates over ethics in public office, with commentators and the public questioning where the line should be drawn between personal convenience and official responsibility.

Kofi Tonto emphasized that leaders must always be cautious to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, warning that actions like these can erode public trust in governance.

As the debate continues, political analysts say the discussion around Mahama’s jet use could have implications for how future leaders handle private assets in official capacities.
