Elche and La Liga star Rafa Mir now faces a potential decade-long prison sentence as prosecutors unveil severe charges that could end his career.
In a dramatic new twist that has sent shockwaves through Spanish football, prosecutors in Valencia have formally requested a 10-and-a-half-year prison sentence for La Liga striker Rafa Mir in connection with a high-profile sexual assault case dating back to September 2024.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has accused Mir of aggravated sexual assault with penetration and causing injuries to a 21-year-old woman, who reportedly met the player at a nightclub and later went to his home in Bétera.
According to the prosecution’s filing, the sentence being sought includes:
- 9 years for aggravated sexual assault
- 18 months for causing injuries to the alleged victim
- A 13-year restraining order requiring Mir to stay at least 500 meters away from the woman
- Eight years’ ban on working in any role involving contact with minors
- Seven years of supervised release after prison
- Civil compensation payment to the alleged victim
Mir, who currently plays for Elche on loan from Sevilla, was initially arrested in September 2024 while on loan at Valencia, and spent nearly two days in custody before being released on bail. He has consistently denied the accusations, claiming the encounters were consensual.
In addition to the criminal case, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest striker has recently faced allegations of making a racist remark toward Espanyol player Omar El Hilali during a La Liga match — a matter now under investigation by league authorities.
The unfolding legal battle now threatens Mir’s professional future, with fans, pundits, and legal experts watching closely as the case moves toward trial.
