STOP BLAMING SOUND ENGINEERS! — PETER DAVID SAYS MUSICAL ARTISTES MUST OWN UP TO DISASTROUS CONCERT SOUND

Popular music commentator Peter David has ignited fresh debate in the entertainment industry, declaring that musical artistes themselves — not sound engineers or event organisers — must take full responsibility for poor sound quality at concerts.

In a hard-hitting critique, David argues that the recurring problem of ear-splitting noise, distorted vocals and chaotic mixes at live shows has become an embarrassing norm — and artistes can no longer dodge accountability.

“The Artiste Is the Boss”
According to Peter David, the lead performer is the chief executive of the concert experience and therefore cannot wash their hands off technical failures.

“If the sound is bad, the artiste is bad — because the artiste approved it,” he insists.

He notes that artistes choose their bands, sound engineers, rehearsals schedules and technical teams, making them ultimately responsible for whatever the audience hears on show night.

Excuses Have Run Out
David slammed the culture of blaming:

  • sound engineers after the show
  • organisers on social media
  • power supply, weather or equipment

He argues that professional artistes plan ahead, conduct sound checks, rehearse extensively and demand standards — instead of showing up late and expecting miracles.

Fans Pay, Fans Deserve Better
With fans paying premium prices for tickets, David says it is unacceptable for artistes to deliver studio-quality hype but stage-quality chaos.

“Once people buy tickets, excuses expire,” he stressed, adding that poor sound damages not just the concert but the artiste’s brand, credibility and future bookings.

Global Acts Don’t Joke With Sound
Drawing comparisons with international performers, Peter David noted that top global artistes are obsessed with sound precision, often travelling with their own engineers and equipment to ensure consistency.

“If they can do it, why can’t we?” he questioned.

A Wake-Up Call to the Industry
The commentary has sparked reactions across the music space, with some agreeing that artistes must lead, while others argue that promoters and venues also play critical roles.

Still, Peter David’s message is blunt and uncompromising:
