The Majority Leader and member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, Hon. Osei Mensah Bonsu has indicated that the number of ministers and appointees under the government is too large and does not make any sense.
Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu speaking at a program in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science And Technology on Wednesday, 13th July, 2022 said it is time Ghana as a nation reduces the number of ministers appointed under any Government. To him, it is time the 1992 constitution which gives power to the President to appoint any number of ministers and create different ministries as he deems fit should be ammended.
As a country, he believes a benchmark should be set and made into law in the Constitution the maximum number of ministers that can be appointed by a President. Such additional clauses in his opinion to stop other President from making unnecessary appointments to burden the taxpayer. ” I am not here talking about the current NPP administration, I refer to all administrations since 1993. The time has come for us to seriously introspect of this.
Hasn’ t the time come come for us to place in the constitution an upper sealing on the number of ministers of states that we should have? Going back to the archives from previous government to the current administration, he can give examples of several ministries that only wasted resources of Ghana without necessarily adding anything to the development of the country.
Concluding his lectures, he indicated that some persons under the Article 76 can be removed to save Ghana millions.
“As I have already stated, Cabinet ministers assist the president in the evolution of policies that is according to Article 76 of the constitution. All bills and agreements that are presented to Parliament are underpinned by governmental policies and principles which the cabinet ministers propose to cabinet.
