The National Democratic Congress particularly Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has alleged that the Electoral Commission is planning on compiling a new voter’ s register for 2024 using Ghana Card only as the qualified document.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu alleged that the EC Boss Madam Jean Mensa is only planning to disenfranchise a lot of Ghanaians and twist results in favour of NPP because millions of voters do not have the Ghana card. With a voter population of about 17 million, only few thousands have Ghana cards.
However, the Director of Electoral Services Department, Dr Serebour Quaicoe responding to Haruna Iddrisu’ s allegations stated categorically that the commission will not and have not even thought of changing the voters register because the one compiled in 2020 is very credible.
He explained that NDC and their members of Parliament are making such unfounded and irrelevant allegations because they have not been attending meetings held between the Electoral Commission and political.
As a result they lack understanding on how things are going and ends up making noise outside. ” Obviously, the NDC has not been attending IPAC meetings of late, after 2020 they have not been attending but all the political parties have been attending and they can all attest to the fact that we have taken them through the new CI, we have discussed everything thoroughly”.
The fact according t Dr. Sribour is that opportunity will be given to those who have not registered to be included and they see Ghana Card to be more credible than health insurance. ” So, what we are saying is that, if people are going to register any day at our district offices, then they need some credible form of identification and it is possible that once it it going to be continues the political parties will not be there to be guaranteeing or objecting to.
