A leading member of the National Democratic Congress, retired Brigadier- General (Rtd. ) Joseph Nunoo- Mensah has revealed that Late President John Jerry Rawlings strongly opposed the choice of John Mahama becoming Former President Mills’ running mate. In 2008, the NDC selected John Dramani Mahama who was then a promising and upcoming politician to become Mills’ running mate. However, Rawlings allegedly said no.
He didn’ t want John Mahama no wj President Mahama. . . 2008 when he was going to become running mate to Atta Mills but Rawlings said ‘ No’ . Somebody told him [Mahama] ‘ go and see General Nunoo- Mensah’ . I can swear by the Bible, Quran. . . ask him whether it happened” . Major Nunoo continued that after Rawlings rejected Mahama as a running mate in 2008, he came to him and begged him to intercede on his behalf.
Looking at how frustrated young Mahama was, he took his hands and convinced J. J Rawlings to accept Mahama. Literally he was the reason why John Dramani Mahama became a running mate and then a Vice President after the NDC won in 2008 which further pushed him to the seat of government. ” He came here and asked me to talk to late President Rawlings on his behalf. I promised I will do it.
Ask Victor Gbeho whether what I’ m saying is true or false, ” he stated. I went to see Rawlings with Gbeho to appeal to him to allow Mills to choose him as vice president [running mate]. [He] became President. . . he put an elbow through my chest, pushed me aside. You don’ t do that, ” the former Chief of Defence Staff lamented.
To his surprised, John Dramani Mahama was not even grateful for what he did for me. Even Mahama came to power in 2012, he forget Major Nunoo and sidelined him from his government’s.
