The peaceful demonstration by Arise Ghana Movement turned bloody on Tuesday, 28th June, 2022 as the Ghana Police Service fired tear gas at protestors after the demonstrators attacked police with stones.
According to TV3 reporter who was an eyewitness to the bloody scenes reported that the Arise Ghana Movement insisted on using Ring Road and march straight to Jubilee House. However the Ghana Police Service prevented them which led to misunderstanding between the police and protestors.
As a means to still force their way through to the Presidency, a cross section of the demonstrators started throwing stones at the police where some police some police officers allegedly got hurt.
Some police personel who were hurt in the exchange have been sent to the hospital for medical treatment as the demonstration continues on a violent and tensious note. TV3 giving a live report from the scene said ” They are insisting on using the Ring Road through to the Presidency and the Police are refusing to allow them to do that which has resulted in the firing of tear gas and the use of water canon against the demonstrators. That is the current situation at the Obra spot in Accra. ” The Ghana Police Service had to reply the violent protestors with tear gas and hot water to stop the stone attack.
Few minutes after the exchanges, the Ghana Police Service issued a communique from their headquarters condemning the attack on Police as shameful and unacceptable. The Police noted that their mission to protect them but they turned around to rather attack.
” Attack on Police in the Ongoing Arise Ghana Demonstration what a shame, we were there to protect you and ensure your safety, but you throw stones at us, injure and hurt us. This behavior is unacceptable and must be condemned”.
