The national cathedral is in the news again and as usual for the bad reason. This time, it has to do with missing money. It will be recalled that the national cathedral secretariat began silver collection to raise funds to finance the project as the president promised.
One of such fund raising exercise was organised in the United States of America. A renowned gospel musician, Sonnie Badu was invited to minister to the congregation through music. The musician accepted the invite and attended the fund raising exercise. But the secretariat reported that it paid the musician some 50, 000 dollars for performing at the function.
The attention of Sonnie Badu was drawn to this allegation and surprisingly the musician has denied receiving such an amount. Reacting to the allegation, the ‘ adonai’ hit maker said he and his team were not even offered seats hence they had to stand outside until it was their turn to perform. He added that at no point did he or his team agree with or demanded for payment for their performance.
This revelation has sparked new controversy surrounding the building of the cathedral with many questioning the whereabouts of the 50, 000 dollars which has been from the state coffers for the purpose of paying Sonnie Badu. This goes to add to the many questions already raised about the national cathedral.
People have asked who the owners of the national cathedral are. Whereas the national cathedral secretariat responded by saying it is a public facility, documents from the registrar general shows that it was registered as a private project limited by guarantee.
The cost of the project has also come under serious security. President Akuffo Addo stated during the unveiling of the project that the it was going to cost 100 million dollars. The cost was revised to 200 million dollars and later to 350 million dollars.
Another issue has to do with the architect who designed the edifice. Sir David Adjaye was paid 25 million dollars for consultancy service without it going through parliament. A petition has since been sent to UK Serious Fraud Office and Queen Elizabeth to investigate and sanction Sir David Adjaye.
