Remove Your Nose Mask, I Won’t Remove It- Bagbin And Ofori Atta Fights In Parliament


There was some minutes of exchanges between Speaker Of Speaker Right Honourable Alban Sumana Bagbin and Finance Minister, Mr Ken Ofori Atta during Parliamentary sitting on Wednesday, 22nd June, 2022. Mr Ken Ofori Atta appeared before Parliament to give account of how GH¢200 million budgeted and other donations for Covid- 19 were used.

Before the Finance Minister read his statement, Right Honourable Alban Sumana Bagbin instructed him to remove his nose mask for purposes of clearness and correct stating of facts.

However, Mr Ken Ofori Atta declined and refused to obey the instruction on the basis that Covid- 19 is still real hence all safety protocols must be observed.

At long last the issued was solved and the Finance Minister continued his account. Mr Ken Ofori Atta told Parliament that although GH¢200 million was approved to be used, that amount was simply not enough to solve Covid 19 related issues.

For instance, GH¢143m out of the total amount was used to provide only free water and electricity for the Ghanaian populace. ” ¢200m was made available for free water and electricity for lifeline consumers, out of this, ¢143m utilized” the Finance Minister said. Aside the free water and electricity, some ¢11. 16 billion was used by Government to support businesses which was affected by Covid- 19.

“I indicated that the supplementary request included the programmer funding of ¢19. 3billion from various funding sources to support the budget both directly and indirectly.  On the expenditure side, an amount of ¢11. 16billion was programmed for Covid-19 related expenses. The difference of ¢8.14 billion was programme to provide for shortfall in revenue”.

According to Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, it is important to note that the various ministries, departments and agencies were also given portions of the money which was about ¢4.6 billion to provide items for safety protocols observation.
