Alban Bagbin Pulls The Trigger As MPs Bash Akufo- Addo’s Ministers Over Absenteeism

It appears that parliament is united on the subject of ministerial absence when they are summoned to address questions in the house.

Following the absence of Finance Minister Ken Ofori- Atta from parliament last week, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin placed the Finance Ministry’ s activities on hold. Ofori- Atta was due to come before the House of Representatives to answer questions concerning the COVID- 19 expense, but she didn’ t show up.

Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah was also expected to come before the parliament on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, to answer nine questions about his sector, but he did not show up.

Addressing the issue, the Speaker read a letter from the Transport Ministry, written by the ministry’ s Chief Director, indicating that the minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, is unable to attend. He then questioned what exactly the terms ‘ unavoidably absent’ meant, adding that he [Bagbin] will not allow some ministers’ repeated failure to reply to inquiries in parliament.

Bagbin also gave Mr. Ofori Asiamah one last opportunity to reply to queries from the house, warning that failure to do so will result in harsh consequences, including a referral of the matter to the Privileges Committee for a hearing.

Meanwhile, Minority Chief Whip Mubarak Muntaka, who had previously expressed alarm about the absentee ministers, said it seemed that some ministers were beginning to take the house for granted and called for immediate measures to prevent a repeat of the situation.

On his part, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh backed his colleague’s request adding that the naming and humiliating of such ministers should be done by Parliament to prevent future occurrences. Annoh Dompreh went on to say that this should be the last time something like this happens.
