Over 30 students of the Islamic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region collapsed and have been rushed to the hospital after police opened tear gas and allegedly fired shots as they were demonstrating. Students of Islamic Senior High School were protesting against consistent knocking down of their colleagues infront of the school.
According to the protestants they have appealed to authorties to put in place measures to prevent further accidents however their pleas have always fell on deaf ears and students are been knocked down every now and then. The Ghana Police Service in attempt to control the angry students open tear gas and as a results over 30 of them collapsed.
Ambulances had to been deployed to transport the student who were not breathing to the hospital. Hundreds of parents according to reports also rushed in to check up on their wards.
Meanwhile the IGP George Akufo has been airlifted to the scene to restore calm. Dampare speaking indicated that the Ghana Police Service is devoted to protecting the students against any further accidents.
He added that he stopped whatever he was doing in Accra and run to Kumasi after hearing the in his capacity as a parents. Although calm has been restored, he would like to advise the students to report their problems with management rather than hitting the grounds to demonstrate.
The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam reacting to the incident demanded that all the police PERSONEL involved should be punished severely.
” The commander who instructed his men to fire live bullet failed, he has to be punished for that. We are waiting for the Inspector General of Police to discuss this with him. These are students who were demonstrating they weren’t armed so why do you fire live bullet? He told TV3
