Ghanaians have praised Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, for returning a fund of 365, 000 cedis placed into his account as an ex- gratia payment by the administration. Togbe Afede believes that receiving the indicated sum is inappropriate because he already receives an annual wage for serving on the board.
What Togbe Afede did touched the hearts of many Ghanaians, prompting a vocal member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Patrick Kwarteng Sarpong, also known as P. K. Sarpong, to respond on his Facebook page to what Togbe Afede did. ” I have seen a wonderfully made letter by Togbe Afede XIV in which he refuses to accept a sum of GHC365, 392. 67 as exgratia paid into his account, ” writes P. K. Sarpong.
Our is classic populism since it in no way demonstrates that he loves this country despite its flaws. Accepting this money, he argues, is reprehensible on his part.
First and foremost, he poignantly acknowledges in his own letter that the job allocated to him and the other members was ” part- time, ” despite the fact that they were paid monthly payments.
Why didn’ t he also turn down the salaries, given that the job only required a few hours of their time? Why hasn’ t he repaid the wages he received throughout his tenure? This gimmick of a move says nothing about Togbe Afede XIV’ s patriotism. The perks that would be accrued are explicitly stated in his letter of employment.
Isn’t it true that he didn’t write a letter affirming or accepting his position on the Council of State? If his motivations were sincere, he would have said in his acceptance letter that he was adamantly opposed to the job’s benefits.
Let it be known that his Sunon- Asogli Power Limited had state assistance under previous President John Agyekum Kuffour, so the perception that he hasn’t profited from the government is untrue. Ghana been quite beneficial to him.
He cannot tell us today that he loves us so much that why he returning the exgratia paid to him because he did not refuse the exgratia in his appointment letter and went on to receive the monthly salaries as a’ part-time worker for the state. In his acceptance letter, he should have refused it.
We’re far too discerning to take this dramatization in it’s entirety.
