KorleBu Mortuary: Its Time Christians Followed Muslims Burial Style- Haruna Iddrisu

Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has urged that Christians consider short and easy burial customs similar to those used by Moslems.

The korlebu teaching hospital morgue in Ghana’ s capital, Accra, has been turned to maggots but still has mortuary workers working in the facilities, according to a report by Gh One’ s Godwin Asediba.

The poor condition of the Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital morgue and the disappointing remuneration of personnel at the facility have outraged Ghanaians, especially the Tamale South MP.

The images showed corpses laying on the bare floor, gutters within the facilities clogged with solid and liquid waste said to have come from the victims, and flies buzzing about them. After being impacted by the documentary, the Minority Leader stated that a solution must be found quickly.

When he was faced with the horrible conditions at the Korle Bu Mortuary during an interview with GH One TV’ s Serwaa Amihere, he made the call.

The Minority Leader demanded that workers’ working conditions and wages be improved, citing the pitiful salaries they get.

He also suggested that the Christian community reconsider long- term freezer preservation of remains. He claims that they can adopt the Muslim approach of rapid, simple burial to relieve congestion on mortuaries.

President John Dramani Mahama dispatched him on an assignment as Labour Minister after the Mortuary employees went on strike, and the Minority Leader disclosed he is drafting a biography, which includes Korle But Mortuary.

Many didn’t anticipate him to enter the main Mortuary, but he did, and he was met by the tragic truth and stinging nature of the strike as he entered.

Mr. Iddrisu believes that a hasty burial without preservation might be beneficial.

According to various internet source, Islamic sharia (religious law) requires that the dead be buried as quickly as possible, after a modest rite of  bathing and shrouding the body and prayers.

Except in the instance of a person slain in war or when foul play is detected, burial is normally within 24 hours of death to safeguard the living from any hygienic difficulties; in those cases, it is important to identify the cause of death before burial.

In Islam, incineration of the body is explicitly forbidden.
