The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of the opposition National Democratic Congress has puzzled why His Excellency Nana Akufo Addo led a ” Kumeproko” protest only for him to be voted into office to mismanage the economy. The MP in a late facebook post made on Wednesday, 11th May 2022 wrote ” Did President Akufo- Addo lead KUMEPREKO demonstrations against President Rawlings only to become President and create SIEMEPREKO economic conditions? The mass excruciating suffering is now unbearable” In 1995, just three years after Late John Jerry Rawlings came into power, a young and exhuberant Nana Akufo Addo led a demonstration against NDC.
This was after J. J Rawlings introduced Value Add Tax. During that time, the protest was dubbed

” Kume Preko” which means kill mean now. According to the organisers the newly introduced tax has brought economic hardships and sufferings to Ghanaians hence the protest.
Masterminds of Kume Preko protests which also took place in Kumasi and Takoradi were Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo (Now the President); Dr. Charles Wereko- Brobbey (Politician); Kwesi Pratt Jnr (Journalist); Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe (Politician); and Kweku Baako Jnr. (Journalist). Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa is confused as to why the man who claimed taxes are killing Ghanaians in 1995 fought all the way into power only to create an economic which didn’ t only kill but also burry Ghanaians once and for all.
He labelled the current economic situation as ” SIEMEPREKO” translated into English as “Bury me now”
Going forward, Hon Ablakwa believes that His Excellency Nana Akuffo Addo should use the same pressure and ideas he suggested during his protest to solve the current problems facing the country.
Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa continued that “Government must present an urgent economic rescue plan to address the current cost of living crisis”.
