Free SHS Students Spotted Staking Lotto To Support Themselves Amidst Food Shortages In Schools.
A group of Free Senior High School students in the Northern Region of Ghana in a viral media reportage made by Radio Tamale is spotted crowded infront of a lotto kiosk to stake their permutated numbers.
According to the Tamale based radio station, students in the region regardless of gender are gradually cultivating the habit of staking lotto at the expense of their education. The group of six made up of both males and females looked serious as the lotto agent carefully penned down their numbers.
After these pictures emerged, social media users have attributed the recent increase in students engaging in lotto and betting activities to food shortages in the region. Initial reports indicated that Senior High Schools in the Northern, Upper East, Upper West and Savannah Regions in Ghana are facing massive food shortages. As a result the only food mostly served at dinning halls is gari and to find other source of income to balance their diet, these students have food solace in lotto.
” We all know food is a security issue. A hungry student is an angry student. Due to the poor nature of the food situation, we are always on alert to quell threats of violence, agitations, demonstrations which can jeopardize a peaceful environment needed for teaching and learning” , an aggrieved Headmistress stated.
