Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo (born March 29, 1944, in Accra, Gold Coast [now Ghana]) is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician who took office as President of Ghana in January 2017.

Akufo- Addo grew up in Accra as the son of Edward and Adeline Akufo- Addo.

In Accra, he attended the Government Boys School and then Rowe Road School for his primary education. Akufo- Addo continued his secondary education in the United Kingdom, where he attended Lancing College (1957– 61).

He returned to Ghana in 1964 and enrolled in the University of Ghana, where he earned a bachelor’ s degree in economics in 1967.

Akufo- Addo returned to the United Kingdom to study law and was admitted to the bar in England (Middle Temple) in 1971 and Ghana in 1975. From 1971 to 1975, he worked in France at the Paris office of the American law firm Coudert Brothers.

He then returned to Ghana, where he worked in the law firm of U. V. Campbell from 1975 to 1979.

He co- founded the law firm Akufo- Addo, Prempeh & Co. in 1979. His father, who served as ceremonial president from 1970 to 1972, his great- uncle, the nationalist J. B. Danquah, and his uncle, William Ofori Atta, were among Akufo- family Addo’ s members who figured prominently in Ghana’ s pursuit of independence and subsequent public service. Akufo- Addo was also involved in political activism.

He was the general secretary of the People’ s Movement for Freedom and Justice (PMFJ) in the late 1970s, a group that opposed the military government’ s plans at the time.

He joined the nascent New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 1992 and served as a member of Parliament for three terms (1996– 2008) under the party’ s banner.

From 2001 to 2003, Akufo- Addo served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice under President John Kufuor.

That same year, he was appointed foreign minister, a position he held until 2007 when he resigned to run for the NPP’ s presidential nomination in the 2008 election; he was elected as the party’ s candidate.
